[4:57] <linyos> ok, how about that internet thing, right
[4:57] <linyos> in some places the internet is closely monitored and locked down
[4:57] <linyos> in other places it is pretty free and you can do what you want
[4:57] <linyos> anonymity is a hard problem
[4:58] <linyos> so, solve the anonymity part of the problem in the free areas of the internet
[4:58] <linyos> and in the locked down parts, focus on tunneling through to the free areas
[4:59] <linyos> you could break the system into a few logical parts, perhaps
[5:00] * sanity (~ian@81-178-81-220.dsl.pipex.com) has joined #freenet
[5:00] <linyos> 1) tunneling through hostile networks
[5:00] <linyos> 2) buying computing resources in free networks
[5:00] <linyos> 3) using those computing resources to provide high-level functions of your choice
[5:00] <linyos> like anonymous whatever, data storage, etc
[5:01] <linyos> conceivably you could have a few "free data centers" where people from all over could tunnel to in whatever way
[5:02] <linyos> then you could buy (or have bought for you) resources like processing power and bandwidth
[5:02] <linyos> and storage
[5:04] <sleon|tuX> toad_, how is the udp port going?
[5:08] * rah (~rah@fennel.arb.bash.sh) has joined #freenet
[5:08] <linyos> yo
[5:08] <linyos> so, anyway, you could think of it like "buying a virtual peer" in the land of free peers
[5:11] <linyos> you could interact with your virtual peer through a web tunnel
[5:13] <linyos> interesting theoretical problem: how to sell computing resources ("computons") and how to construct anonymity systems from them
[5:13] <linyos> sort of like grid computing
[5:14] <linyos> is there some kind of anonymity primitive that can be bought and sold from third parties
[5:17] <linyos> or is physical control of the hardware necessary (which is fine i guess: you could buy computons that run on toad's secure blade server, and you trust toad not to send everything you do to the NSA)
[5:35] <linyos> i mean, what someone behind a nasty firewall needs isn't so much _one_ particular application that is specifically designed to circumvent it, but a generic tunnel out to a free computer that can interact with other free computers
[5:37] <linyos> a computer imprisoned by a firewall is exactly that. imprisoned. it's no good.

[9:35] <toad_> hi Newsbyte (linyos)
[9:35] <toad_> buying - no
[9:35] <toad_> no anonymous digicash anywhere in the world (War on Terror remember? War on Drugs too)
[9:36] <toad_> but IMHO it's unrealistic long term to expect large parts of the inet to be totally free
[9:36] <toad_> hmm maybe not Newsbyte
[9:37] <toad_> somebody else perhaps
[9:37] <toad_> rah maybe
