[11:36] <greycat> Fuck. My lag symptoms are back on my home box. And I'm at work.
[11:37] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> toad, you there?
[11:44] <greycat> Connections open (Inbound/Outbound/Limit) 38 (13/25/40)
[11:44] <greycat> Transfers active (Transmitting/Receiving) 61 (36/25)
[11:44] <greycat> Lag to my home network is 2-3 seconds
[11:45] <greycat> Or more. NINE seconds this time.
[11:47] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> that's nice to hear
[11:48] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> from 3 minutes to 9 seconds is a considerable improvement :-)
[11:49] <greycat> where did you get "3 minutes" from?
[11:51] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> ah, those newbies! spiled rotten! :-) Where is the time Freenet took ages and ages to show anything? (well, not that far away, granted ;-)
[11:53] <greycat> I'm spoiled rotten by having < 100 ms lag on my home connection when giftd is shoving ogg/mp3 files out at full throttle.
[11:53] <greycat> That's what my PF ruleset is for.
[11:54] <greycat> But Freenet is doing *something* that causes my lag to spiral out of control. I'm trying to figure out *what*.
[11:55] * pittaman (~mistery_b@d51A410CA.kabel.telenet.be) Quit ("Wist ik maar alles.")
[12:04] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> I wish you well in the path for enlightment in Freenet, as I did with the many that went on your searching way before you :-)

[15:38] <Archeron> I had to use an older dated edition
[15:40] <greycat> same here; I have yesterday's
[15:42] <ShaunMacPherson> Isn't it wasteful to insert it daily?
[15:42] <ShaunMacPherson> I'm sure nothing drastic changes on a daily basis on freenet...

[18:58] <lolo-laptop> shouldn't .mil be banned from freenet :-D :-P
[19:03] <kers> wow
[19:12] * guido^pe (~unknown@dsl-082-082-158-039.arcor-ip.net) Quit (Remote closed the connection)
[19:16] <lolo-laptop> wow?
[19:28] <kers> the thing that the govt is here publicly :)
[19:30] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> toad!!! you there?
[19:32] <hobx> some sailor isn't "the government"
[19:39] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> I never said it was
[19:39] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> that said, govenment says a ot
[19:40] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> tke the italian forum about freenet; whole discussion about if it's truelly necessary
[19:41] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> the whole debate sems to be hether or not freenet does any good in societies like china...butit's never considered of their own country
[19:42] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> freenet, IMHO, does not only serves for obvious censorship like that of china, but, and foremost, for western governments
[19:43] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> unless one thinks that western governments always tell the truth and are honest to their citizens, we need it as much, if not more, to combat our own 'democratic' governments, then any dictatorial or otherwise foreign country. That is what most forget.
[19:48] * greycat (rfc1413@wooledge.org) has joined #freenet
[19:49] <greycat> Lag: 3.12
[19:49] <greycat> Connections open (Inbound/Outbound/Limit) 22 (2/20/32)
[19:49] <greycat> Transfers active (Transmitting/Receiving) 59 (20/39)
[19:49] <greycat> dropping maxconnections is solving the problem.
[19:49] * Hory (~Miranda@81.196.25.110) Quit (Read error: 232 (Connection reset by peer))
[19:49] <greycat> bah.
[19:49] <greycat> dropping maxconnections is *not* solving the problem.
[19:51] <i2p_iip> <Newsbyte> what is?
[19:54] <greycat> newsbyte: the problem, in its most generic formulation is: once Freenet gets running full-steam, my internet connection starts to become unresponsive. It gets worse and worse until I kill the node. The initial symptom is lag in an IRC connection. The next is lag when NTP tries to sync with upstream servers, and the clocks start to destabilize. Third is that DNS lookups take longer and longer, and then fail altogether. Finally, everything just stops work
[19:55] <greycat> My best hypothesis at this time for the immediate cause is that it seems to become bad when I have a lot of simultaneous active transfers.
[19:55] <mikeDOTd> greycat: do you have ADSL?
[19:55] <greycat> Connections open (Inbound/Outbound/Limit) 21 (2/19/32)
[19:55] <greycat> Transfers active (Transmitting/Receiving) 62 (23/39)
[19:55] <greycat> yes. pppoe.
[19:56] <mikeDOTd> you might have to really throttle the outbound
[19:57] <mikeDOTd> i've noticed adsl performs worse than cable modems when pushing data out
[19:57] <greycat> the one thing I'm SURE of, is that it's NOT caused by simple outbound traffic. I run my outgoing traffic at close to maximum capacity 24x7 without ANY problems. I serve up mp3/ogg/etc. files with giftd and apache all day and all night.
[19:57] <greycat> NOTHING breaks until freenet runs.
[19:58] <greycat> I'm using openbsd's PF ruleset to prioritize ACK/DNS/ssh packets, and even with giftd+apache going full-bore I normally have perfectly acceptable latency on my interactive TCP sessions like ssh and IRC
[19:59] <greycat> I've been trying to figure out this damned problem for *months* now

[20:54] <toad_> Zorix: mabe
[20:54] <toad_> maybe
[20:54] <toad_> but not tonight
[20:54] <i2p_iip> <gott> toad
[20:58] <Zorix> hah ok
[20:58] <Zorix> people dont like the broken inserts
[20:59] <toad_> yeah i know
[20:59] <toad_> i'm not sure whether the timeout changes will fix them
[20:59] <toad_> that's the problem
[20:59] <toad_> we need to test it on unstable - or on a new network
[20:59] <Zorix> well maybe it should be considered why they worked better before
[20:59] <i2p_iip> <gott> toad
[21:00] <Zorix> test it on unstable thats what its there for
[21:01] <i2p_iip> <gott> toad
[21:07] <i2p_iip> <gott> toad
[21:08] <toad_> woah
[21:09] <toad_> there's a LOT of frost boards...
[21:09] <toad_> and i bet that's not a complete list...
[21:10] <toad_> and a disturbing number of pedo lists
[21:12] * toad_ must check whether HTLs are clipped before leaving the node, i have a suspicion they aren't... or did i fix that weeks ago?
[21:12] <Zorix> too much pedo
[21:12] <Zorix> only downside
[21:12] <i2p_iip> <gott> toad: don't be prejudiced
[21:13] <Zorix> im sure my node has keys to some very dirty things
[21:15] <i2p_iip> <gott> my node has keys to love
[21:16] <Zorix> what kinda love
[21:16] <Zorix> "child love" ?
[21:17] <toad_> ugh
[21:18] <toad_> the way to get rid of paedophilia on freenet is to make freenet work so well that people use it who don't need to
[21:18] <Zorix> there you go
[21:18] <Zorix> theres some inspiration
[21:18] <i2p_iip> <gott> toad_: please be respectful.
[21:18] <toad_> yes this will provide cover traffic for paedos, and maybe more of them will use it.. but otoh, it would be a much lower proportion of all content
[21:19] <Zorix> gott do you like that stuff
[21:19] <toad_> is that a solution, or is that sweeping it under the carpet?
[21:19] <i2p_iip> <gott> Not particularly, but I endorse it.
[21:19] <Zorix> its all part of freedom
[21:19] * Hory (~Miranda@81.196.25.110) has joined #FreeNet
[21:20] <Zorix> but everyone has their own opinion as long as they dont become destructive
[21:20] <toad_> i suppose it's a partial solution - substantial noninfringing uses, the more the better, good for mid term survival..
[21:20] <i2p_iip> <gott> toad: how far away from Leeds do you live ?
[21:21] * kers (~kers@h180n1fls33o873.telia.com) Quit ("Leaving")

[21:21] <toad_> ~ 4 hours by train
[21:21] <toad_> brighton probably is about the same?
[21:21] <toad_> why?
[21:21] <Zorix> ok i got some bad things to say about trains
[21:21] <Zorix> rails suck
[21:21] <toad_> Zorix: I have a lot of bad things to say about cars too, but it's waaay off topic
[21:22] <Zorix> i have to hit 6 tracks on the way to class
[21:22] <i2p_iip> <gott> because I am in england and have always wanted to harass you.
[21:22] <toad_> and buses
[21:22] <Zorix> my tires and alignment are getting way off
[21:22] <toad_> oh and american public transport sucks worse than british does
[21:22] <Zorix> because of it
[21:22] <Zorix> yea
[21:22] <Zorix> except in big cities
[21:22] <toad_> because the car/tarmack companies buy it up and run it down
[21:23] <toad_> sanity may prevail in a few ultra-dense cities such as NY
[21:23] <Zorix> i used public transportation in nyc
[21:23] <Zorix> it was good
[21:23] <i2p_iip> <gott> actually, I'm not in england. But I rather like the name 'Leeds'. It sounds so british. If I had a British fetish, as I do a French and German fetisch, I would immediately try to talk with a barmy british accent.
[21:23] <toad_> gott: uh, it takes all kinds...
[21:23] <toad_> err all sorts
[21:23] <toad_> :|
[21:24] <Zorix> i got a friend i work with from london
[21:24] <Zorix> funny ppl
[21:25] <Zorix> such a funny accent too heh
[21:25] <toad_> hehe
[21:26] <toad_> TOFDO: 81B/243T
[21:26] <toad_> meaning 81 boards and 243 texts?
[21:26] <Zorix> not sure
[21:28] <toad_> hrrm
[21:28] <i2p_iip> <gott> yes
[21:28] <toad_> board public, message "Re: linux gpl violation" by LostFloppy...
[21:28] <toad_> is that a GPL violation?
[21:28] <Zorix> hah
[21:29] <i2p_iip> <gott> In the heat of the night / In the heat of the day / When I close my eyes / When I look toad's way / When I meet the fear that lies inside / When I hear toad sing / In the heat of the moment ... Sing sing sing
[21:29] <toad_> if you ship a black box, which uses OSS, are you required to provide source, acknowledgements, ability to change stuff?
[21:29] <toad_> which?
[21:29] <Zorix> source
[21:30] <toad_> acknowledgements?
[21:30] <Zorix> depends on license i guess
[21:30] <Zorix> maybe
[21:30] <Zorix> i dunno
[21:31] * Zorix tries to figure where that question came from
[21:33] <i2p_iip> <gott> toad: you are super duper.
[21:33] <i2p_iip> <gott> I wonder what toad sounds like.
[21:33] <toad_> ribbit
[21:33] <i2p_iip> <gott> I should make a toad fanfreesite.

[21:35] <i2p_iip> <gott> toad, are you, or have you ever been, a member of Depeche Mode ?
[21:36] <i2p_iip> <gott> His lack of a response is an affirmation of him being a Synthpop Fag. Quick ! Someone wipe off his lipstick.

[21:38] <i2p_iip> <gott> .navy.mil
[21:38] <Zorix> yea we have been infiltrated by the navy
[21:38] <toad_> heh
[21:38] <i2p_iip> <gott> and a synthpop fag is anyone from non-mainland europe who listens to Depeche Mode.
[21:38] <toad_> does it rlookup?
[21:39] <Zorix> heh
[21:39] <toad_> and even if it does it doesn't mean he's on his employer's time...
[21:39] <Zorix> i had a friend from the navy
[21:39] * toad_ has seen nsa.gov rlookups that don't lookup properly...
[21:39] <Zorix> only time he could be on irc was on his own time

[21:41] <Zorix> that wasnt fun
[21:41] <toad_> if i had any friends in classified areas, i'd have to kill you if i told you about them ;)

[21:51] <toad_> what is that really?
[21:52] <i2p_iip> <gott> toad: whirlpool was the board for some guy's freesite. It became somewhat popular for a while, but I would assume it's dead now.
[21:53] <i2p_iip> <gott> if you don't hang out on frost, toad, you probably miss a lot of aktion.
[21:54] <toad_> gott: what do you mean by aktion?
